Page 56- Sri Raag Mahala 1- ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਚਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ The Pandits, the religious scholars, read their books, but they do not understand the real meaning. ਅਨ ਕਉ ਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥ They give instructions to others, and then walk away, but they deal in Maya themselves. ਕਥਨੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ਰਹਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੬॥ Speaking falsehood, they wander around the world, while those who remain true to the Shabad are excellent and exalted. ||6|| ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ There are so many Pandits and astrologers who ponder over the Vedas. ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੇ ਵਾਦੇ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ They glorify their disputes and arguments, and in these controversies they continue coming and going. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਕਹਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥੭॥ Without the Guru, they are not released from their karma, although they speak and listen and preach and explain. ||7|| ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ They all call themselves virtuous, but I have no virtue at all. ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ With the Lord as her Husband, the soul-bride is happy; I, too, love that God ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਨਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੫॥ O Nanak, through the Shabad, union is obtained; there is no more separation. ||8||5|| Page 85- Sri Raag Mahala 3- ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Shalok, Third Mehl: ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੇਦ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੁਆਇ ॥ The Pandits, the religious scholars, constantly read and recite the Vedas, for the sake of the love of Maya. ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ In the love of duality, the foolish people have forgotten the Lord's Name; they shall receive their punishment. ਜਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਜੋ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥ They never think of the One who gave them body and soul, who provides sustenance to all. ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਗਲਹੁ ਨ ਕਟੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ The noose of death shall not be cut away from their necks; they shall come and go in reincarnation over and over again. ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not understand anything. They do what they are pre-ordained to do. ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ Through perfect destiny, they meet the True Guru, the Giver of peace, and the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਣਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਸੁਖੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ They enjoy peace, they wear peace, and they pass their lives in the peace of peace. ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, they do not forget the Naam from the mind; they are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||1|| Page 226- Gauri Mahala 1- ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Simritees, ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥ and read Vedas and Puraanas until tired; ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥ but without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7|| Page 686- Dhanasaree Mahala 1- ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੂਲਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ Reading and studying, one becomes confused, and suffers punishment. ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ By great cleverness, one is consigned to coming and going in reincarnation. ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਭਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ One who chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and eats the food of the Fear of God ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫॥ Becomes Gurmukh, the Lord's servant, and remains absorbed in the Lord. ||5||
